What is CANITH?

The California Network of Independent Trivia Hosts is a loosely affiliated group of pub quiz presenters and writers providing services throughout California.

If you are a potential client looking for quality trivia entertainment and you see a CANITH badge like the one above on a social media profile or website, you can trust that you’re going to get a fun game run by an experienced, professional host!

CANITH is not a business, corporation, or dues collecting entity! It’s more like a support network—a club—that freelance trivia entertainers may join to share and receive advice, question and answer materials, and perhaps above all, something of a safety net by keeping contact with a group of experienced trivia hosts in case scheduling conflicts or emergencies arise.

While CANITH does not collect dues or require any commitments from members, it is not an open group. Membership is vetted by the founding members, Chris O’Brien (of Trivia LA / now Trivia CA) and Brendan Sargent of Lucky Guess Trivia.

How CANITH Began

CANITH grew organically over the course of three years of cooperation and support between Brendan Sargent of Lucky Guess Trivia and Chris O’Brien here at Trivia CA.

Chris and Brendan met in 2021 as independent trivia writers and hosts presenting pub quiz / bar trivia games playing each other’s games and developed a friendship as fellow freelancers in the trivia entertainment world.

Both Brendan and Chris pride themselves on providing a personal touch and the flexibility that comes with being an independent contractor, working directly with clients to provide unique and professionally presented trivia games. However, for all the advantages that being independent offers, it also means that when conflicts arise, there’s no payroll of employees to call upon to fill in the gaps.

So, with time, each became the other’s first call when emergencies arose or when clients requested games on dates and times that were already booked up.

Eventually, as both operations grew, they had the idea to expand their mini co-op to include more trivia entertainers like themselves, to share their experience, offer and receive more support, and of course, to be able to provide their services to even more clients!

Thus, the California Network of Independent Trivia Hosts was born!
